How a Furnace Works (Video)
How a Gas Furnace Operates
The home thermostat controls the temperature in your home. In the case of heating, the furnace responds to the temperature falling below the temperature set in your thermostat. An electric fan pulls fresh air into the heating equipment. Since it's being drawn through your furnace's air filter, it should be clean particles. As the air is being drawn in to the furnace, an electronic ignitor informs the furnace that warm air is required. So, the burner ignites and heats the air flowing "through" the heat exchanger. This air is exhausted through the flue to the outside of the home because it has combustion particles in it. However, the air flowing "past" the heat exchanger is warmed and sent through the ventilation ductwork into the rooms of the home. When the thermostat detects that the temperature has risen to the temperature set, the furnace turns off.

The 4 components in a gas furnace:
The Burner - The compressor is located immediately next to the condenser. The compressor is a pump that moves refrigerant between the evaporator and the condenser to chill the indoor air.
The Heat Exchanger - A fan blows air over the condenser to dissipate heat outside.
Ductwork - The air filter is located in or near the interior air conditioning unit, and it's job is to remove particles from the air.
Vent Pipes or Flue - The thermostat is a temperature control system who's job it is to regulate the amount of cool air that is distributed throughout the home.
